Slack Key Day Concert... Celebrating Family Music!

Wednesday June 13, 2018  6-9pm
All Saints' Church in Kapaa

This concert will ‘TUNE YOUR WORLD TO ALOHA'!
Proceeds Benefit the All Saints' Pipe Organ Restoration Project and Slack Key Music Center's programs to perpetuate the family music tradition of Hawaiian Slack Key.

Cactus Sam and Krista Harris will be joining hosts Doug & Sandy McMaster, award winning slack key guitar and ukulele artists, for an evening of family music.  And possibly another surprise guest artist... still awaiting confirmation.

Doug & Sandy McMaster have 11 CDs to perpetuate the knowledge and experience of the endangered artform of traditional Hawaiian slack key guitar and ukulele. Guided by the kupuna (elders), they have dedicated their lives to continuing the family music tradition of slack key music. Since 2014, they’ve been voted by Hawaii Magazine Readers as #1 Best Live Show and received the Certificate of Excellence by TripAdvisor.

Cactus & Krista Harris join the McMasters this evening with their family music on piano and flute. They hail from Paso Robles, California. Cactus lives the cowboy life owning Harris Stage Lines with his parents, teaching and preserving the wild west traditions. He was taught by rodeo stars like Monty Montana and the Riata Ranch Cowboy Girls. Cactus and Krista are both accomplished musicians. He specializes in organ. He and Krista were married last year.

Absolutely Awesome!

Torrential rains over several days didn't keep the fans away.  Flash flood warnings had been delivered via texts several times during the day.  Yet every seat in the house filled.  Several rows had to be made available for the ticket table as the rain was blowing onto the lanais.  At one point I looked out at the water streaming off the roof (glad the roof was replaced earlier this year), the outdoor safety LED lights were shining on the streams of water making them look like icicles.

Warmth and Aloha filled the sanctuary bringing smiles to faces and joyous clapping at the end of each performance.  Hosts Doug and Sandy McMaster took the stage to set the ambience with their roots of traditional Hawaiian slack key guitar and ukulele.  A song from early 1800's blessed the gathering, the place, and invited the ancestors to join the experience.
Ho'onani, an ukulele duo, Barbara Bones and Susan Bransfield took the stage to share their lanai stylings of beautiful Hawaiian song and stories of healing the world with an ukulele in every hand.  Budding songwriters, the hook was set with their own Mahalo Nui Loa Kauai. (Awaiting images and video to be shared.)
Mahalo nui loa to SKMC for bringing piping hot coffee!  (Priceless!)
Kawika and Kauilani:  Growing up with the 'new' slack key born in the early 1900's, hearing the songs by so many beloved performers - such as Gabby Pahinui, Dennis Kamakahi, Ledward Kaapana, and Leonard Kwan -  this duo brings it home in a polished package using modern technology to express their medleys and arrangements of the classics.
Up next, Kellie Lin Knott, a performing songwriter, introduced her latest CD to Kauai - The World Awake - with several numbers from that beautiful recording including Tomorrow River, Stay Right Where You Are, Take Comfort, The Dream, and ever sassy Make Me Wonder.  She shared a 'yet to be released' number as well. Her stories gave the audience an moving  understanding of the life experiences that are expressed beautifully in the songs she writes.   www.kellielin.com
Lindsay Maclean, captured the audiences hearts with her stories of life as a board certified music therapist and the music she shared.  She was called to this profession in a deep and profound way and we were all on the edge of our seats as she told the story.
